When creating our film, we had a specific genre for the film. This was mystery, and we believed this to be a popular and effective genre for the audience because it keeps the audience interested and intrigued to find out what is going on. We had considered other genres like horror but we believed that mystery would hold tension and suspense and be effective, and our group liked the genre in other movies seen in the past.
We had envisaged what we planned to gain from this film and what we wanted to achieve. Throughout the whole of the film the question holds what has happened to people who die and have died; this ties in well with the genre we chose because it creates a mystery when the questions are not answered for the audience. Also we planned to make the audience question what is happening; we liked the idea of doing this because it keeps the audience interested in what is happening and what will happen and poses questions like why is the main character the only person left and what has happened to the dead people.
We had to express the genre in a different amount of ways, some of which were camera angles, mis en scene, sound and more. Camera angles were used frequently to help show the genre, the first camera angle used is a canted angle and we added this to provide questions for the audience like why is he on the floor. Another camera angle was a long shot looking down on the character near the end of the film; this gave a sense of mystery because it seemed like someone was looking down at the character as he glazed around, this poses the question to the audience why is he being watched.
Sound was a factor when trying to achieve the genre we wanted. This played a big part in the success of this because we used mysterious music to create the correct mood. We emphasised some parts of the sound during the film to show the audience that this was an important part of the film or to create a certain mood. For example when the main character looks into the car and the camera looks in; there is a loud sound to make the audience jump because there is a dead body in the car.
Mise en scene was used throughout our film. We decided we wanted a more natural background and not add too many obvious techniques to the film. We used one main mise en scene technique, which was the car. This was used because it created mystery because there was a dead body in the car and this would pose the question to the audience of why there is a car there and why is somebody dead in there. If we used the mis en scene too much it would have affected the genre in a negative way because there would have been less mystery and it would look like we are trying to force the technique too much. Although the mis en scene was used a lot during our film, we tried not to overuse this because it would ruin the effective parts in which we used mise en scene.
